Welcome to Jefferson County! Small-Town Comfort, Close to Key Metropolitan Areas!
Found nestled between Wisconsin’s two largest metropolitan areas lies a place that epitomizes the image that many residents and visitors have of Wisconsin’s rural countryside. Rolling hills formed by the glaciers are found dotted with red barns and grazing cows. Green farm fields mix with wetlands, woodlands, lakes and meandering rivers. Small cities and villages balance character and charm with changing economic times. This oasis is Jefferson County.
Between 1994 and 2004, Wisconsin’s population grew 7.3% and is expected to grow another 3.3% by 2010. Jefferson County has been noted to be one of the counties with the largest expected growth. Although Jefferson County is situated between the Madison Metro and Waukesha County-Milwaukee 7 Coastal City corridor, it still retains its small town charm in many ways.
In the 1800’s, when Wisconsin was being settled, Jefferson County’s glacial landscape of drumlins and wetlands interested many settlers. The rich soil and waterways made the area perfect for the rise of agricultural as well as dairy farming which can be viewed at the Hoard Museum in Fort Atkinson. Further, the network of rivers cut out by the glaciers promoted milling and wood production as well as a collection of small river towns.
In the early days settlers were primarily of Scandinavian or Germanic decent. Today, many Hispanic cultures are represented as well as the Europeans who first settled the county to make our county ethnically diverse.
To compliment the beautiful scenery of Jefferson County, one can find a county of exceptional economic development. Corporate presence and manufacturing diversity exists in every corner of the county. In addition to manufacturing and food production, is the emergence of bioenergy technology.
For years Wisconsin has been noted nationally for its progressive policies regarding water and natural resources. Jefferson County has recently been honored to be the object of a new project entitled the Glacial Heritage Area which is centered primarily in western Jefferson County and also includes portions of Dane, Dodge and Rock counties.
This effort to put together a connection of “strings and pearls” will integrate conservation lands, recreation trails, facilities and small communities.
We invite you now to sit back and let your adventure into Jefferson County unfold. From its lush green fields to its booming industry, small river town “main streets” and Broadway shows, you will find a little bit of heaven you can enjoy right here on Earth.
Welcome to Jefferson County, Wisconsin… We’re not just another pretty place!
