Read And Hike On A Library StoryWalk!

Enjoy Nature And A Good Book On A Story Trail

Close your eyes and imagine the perfect fall day. Golden leaves swirling around you, a chilly breeze lifting your hair, a sweater and hat keeping you warm. It sounds like a perfect day for a walk, doesn’t it? If you’re ready for a new walking experience with your family, take a stroll along a library Story path! There are four sprinkled throughout Jefferson County in parks and natural areas so you can enjoy the autumn beauty and share some fun family memories at the same time.

On story paths, pages of a picture book are mounted on weather-proof signs and spaced along a trail. The concept was first developed as the StoryWalk® Project by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library to encourage early literacy and family time in nature.

Ready for a walk? Try out all four story paths in Jefferson County this October:

Head to Ralph Park in Fort Atkinson and you’ll find the Dwight Foster Public Library’s StoryWalk® on a paved walking path. Perfect for a park, October’s book is We All Play by Julie Flett, which celebrates the joy of playtime.

L.D. Fargo Public Library’s StoryWalk® winds in and out of a forest path in Wallace Park in Lake Mills. The last page ends at the playground, which is a great way to reward the kids for a hike in the woods. A funny spooky book called Creepy Crayon by Aaron Reynolds is out on the trail this month.

Count down the days to Halloween with the 12 Days of Halloween book by Leann Schwandt Lehner on the Jefferson Public Library’s StoryWalk® this October. The trail is a paved walking path near Stoppenbach Park that meanders along the new Meadow Springs Conservancy.

Enjoy more fall foliage at Brandt Quirk Park along the Watertown Public Library’s Storybook Trail. On Friday, October 28, the trail will be lit with paper lanterns so you can enjoy the enchanted trail after dark. What a great way to kick off the Halloween festivities!

See you out on the trails and happy reading!

A hand holds up the book "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything" under a wooden sign for the Storybook Trail. Behind the sign, the sky is blue and there is an open field with several bare trees.
