A RICH HERITAGE
Fort Atkinson boasts a fascinating history and takes pride in preserving the past. Visit our historical landmarks and explore the Hoard Historical Museum & National Dairy Shrine Museum where you’ll explore the story of the 1832 Black Hawk War and find out what kind of soldier young Abraham Lincoln was. Also at the museum, be sure to visit the new long-term exhibit, Mysteries of the Mounds, which includes a 17-minute video program. At Rock River Park, experience what life was like in the 1800’s at the annual Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous held every Memorial Day weekend. This fur trading re-enactment is complete with authentic costumes, tools, food and games. You can also take a self-guided walking tour through our historic downtown district or visit a replica of the fort as it was in 1832.
Opportunity is everywhere for those who enjoy canoeing. Waterways from rural Fort Atkinson lead all the way into the vintage downtown under Main Street. The Bark and Rock Rivers both lead to Lake Koshkonong, where fishing and boating opportunities are at arm’s length. You can also take advantage of the Glacial River bike/pedestrian trail that navigates through downtown Fort Atkinson. Golfers will love the area’s golf courses, including Koshkonong Mounds Country Club, which offers 11 rare Indian effigy mounds. Skydiving, miniature golf, bowling and many more family activities are just minutes away.
