The Packers had just lost to the Carolina Panthers that afternoon. We had the visit to Donny’s Girl planned. What else was there to do but eat and look forward to the next game: “The Lions should be a breeze. We’ve got them at home.” (Little did we know, as we ate our Donny’s Girl dinners…)
So it was with football optimism that found us in Pipersville, Wisconsin – that out-of-the-way spot on County Road E in northeastern Jefferson County Wisconsin famous for that quintessential Wisconsin Supper Club called Donny’s Girl .
The spacious bar, inviting dining room and friendly greeting from owners Jaclyn and Lorn Mueller make you feel right at home upon entering Donny’s Girl. If you want fancy schmancy, you are in the wrong place. Donny’s Girl is down home, old school, comfortable shoe ambiance that you can’t hope to replicate.
We are ushered to our table, ready for our 6:00PM reservation. Our experienced waitress greets us warmly and soon cocktails are in hand and the Carolina Panthers are a distant bad memory. “We’ll get ‘em back during the playoffs” someone says. And that helps us concentrate on the matter at hand: what to order. Donny’s Girl has an extensive menu, so everyone ordered something different. Roast Pork and Sauerbraten – offered every Sunday night – are summoned. Other entrees ordered include a Full Rack of Ribs, Lamb Shank, Sirloin Steak with haystack onions, Filet with Shrimp stuffed with Monterey Jack and Crab and a Roast Duck.
Meals qualify for the sumptuous salad bar which includes oodles of options. From Pickled Herring to Fresh Spinach with Hot Bacon Dressing, to various home-made salads (the Pea Salad was a group favorite) this salad bar has to be in the top 5 all time. Absolutely fantastic.
Home-made hot wheat bread on a cutting board with a sharp knife accompanies the soup choices – Squash and Baked French Onion – both pronounced superb.
Our piping hot entrees did not disappoint. Steaks were done to perfection, the haystack onions and stuffed shrimp must have been good because they both disappeared quickly. The Lamb Shank and Pork Loin were very tender, bathed in luscious gravy. The Sauerbraten accompanied by real mashed potatoes and gingersnap gravy and red cabbage was consumed in its entirety. The huge rack of ribs could not be consumed in one sitting, but I have it on good authority that the leftovers were front and center for lunch the following day! Special mention should be accorded to the Roast Duck with cherry wine sauce, because our fellow reviewer who ordered it holds a very high standard for duck preparation. She declared Donny’s Girl’s duck “one of the finest I have ever eaten.”
Other accompaniments included wild rice, Irish potatoes, fries and mashed sweet potatoes, all well rendered.
Worth the trip from wherever you are – try Donny’s Girl when you are looking for your next Wisconsin Supper Club experience. You will not go away hungry and will be back for more.
