Salamone’s Italian Pizzeria is a Jefferson County stalwart in the pizza universe. On a recent Wednesday evening, your Pizza Review Crew sat down to check out the long standing institution for a taste of what Jefferson County residents called “Best Pizza for 2012 & 2013” in a Daily Union poll.

Salamone’s spacious dining room was spotless and inviting. We ordered a pitcher of beer and some soft drinks. Service was friendly and courteous throughout our visit.

Cheese Garlic Bread and a House Salad were pronounced delicious prior to the main courses: pizza. Crusts include thin, regular, deep dish or stuffed with gluten free as an alternative. All are available in 10”, 12”, 14” or 16”. Between the thin and regular crusts, the consensus winner was the thin crust. Thin and crunchy, the tasty, chewy thin crust stood up well to the toppings. We look forward to sampling the deep dish & stuffed crusts someday soon. Calzones are also available on the complete menu.

Pizza ordering falls into three categories at Salamone’s: Tom Ato’s Family, Verde Pesto’s Family or Al Fredo’s Family.

From Tom Ato’s Family:

• The Deluxe sausage, onion, green pepper, green & black olive cheese and tomato.
• Pizza Toscano our hands down favorite of the evening boasts mushroom, onion, tomato, fresh garlic, spinach, feta and mozzarella cheeses. It was fantastic.
• The Supreme came in a close second sporting sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, mushroom, onion and green pepper.

The Verde Pesto Family

• The Mediterranean containing pesto sauce, mushroom, onion, spinach, black & green olives and artichoke hearts. The toppings were delicious, but upon ordering next time, we would order “extra sauce please.”

We pushed away from the table happy and content, looking forward to our next visit to Salamone’s Italian Pizzeria.
