On a recent Friday evening, your Fish Dish Review Crew landed “on the Green” – Mulligan’s On The Green that is – at the Lake Mills Golf Club on the south side of Lake Mills, Wisconsin. The entrance is a ramp from the spacious parking lot. The door opens to a lounge area adjacent to the long bar and hostess station. Looking for a view? Large picture windows offer the soothing view of the outdoor patio and the golf course beyond. Having made a reservation, we were seated in one of the many thoughtfully laid out dining areas. Soft lighting and earth tones complete a sense of relaxed ease.

The “Supper Club Menu,” served daily after 5pm, reflects the recently installed Le Cordon Bleu trained chef, Josh Collins. For instance, the “Supper Club Burger” offers a choice between traditional beef or a Portobello mushroom cap and a Forest Mushroom Cavatappi, both of which intrigue me as I write this.

But on to the fish!

The Friday Night Specials feature Tyranena (from our famous local brewery) beer-battered North Atlantic Cod or baked Talipia served three different ways: Spicy Blackened Cajun Rubbed Pan-Seared Talipia, Lemon Peppered Talipia or Baked Talipia with Tarragon Hollandaise Sauce. The large, juicy chunks of Cod had a light coating of beer batter which married well with the tangy tartar sauce. All Talipia offerings were masterfully prepared and delicious, but DO order the Tarragon Hollandaise Sauce for any one of them. The sauce option is a refreshing and delicious change from the usual tartar sauce. Our group could not get enough of it!

For a few dollars more, add two pieces of Blackened Chicken with Saint Louis style barbecue sauce. The chicken was perfectly done and the sauce was homemade by Chef Collins. Terrific!

The sides? Rye rolls, coleslaw, tater tots, french fries, house-made chips, baked potato or potato pancake – all of which stood up well and complemented the fish and chicken. I noticed on the daily menu that sweet potato fries are offered for an additional $0.50. We suggest adding the sweet potato fries to the evening offerings.

Other fish offerings include Stone Ground Salmon, Butterfly Shrimp, Sriracha Basa (pan fried catfish with light sriracha cream and pico de gallo) and the Pan Fried Walleye which one of our party ordered. The perfectly turned, flaky Walleye was so big he had to take a piece home. Fine dining!

Service was attentive and friendly, bathrooms clean and tidy and the restaurant area well maintained (tables bussed and reset promptly.) We ordered the soup specials for the evening – Seafood Chowder  and Chicken Curly Noodle Soup. Both were flavorful and delicious.

Solid work from the new kitchen staff combined with Supper Club ambiance made for a winning combination. We gave Mulligan’s On The Green at the Lake Mills Golf Club a 4.5 on a 5.0 point scale.

Mulligan’s “Daily Menu” is comprised of Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Wraps, Burgers and other Sandwiches, and Home Made Pizza.

The kitchen opens every day at 11:00am and the after 5:00pm “Supper Club Menu” is served daily except Sunday, when Mulligan’s Sunday Brunch is offered.

Make Mulligan’s a regular stop on your Fish Fry itinerary – or any other day of the week. You’ll be glad you did!
